I have been blessed with THE BEST PARENTS IN THE WORLD! Maybe I am biased, but if you know them I bet you can’t disagree. Today I am going to share some of the best advice I’ve received from my dad {you will soon find out, my mom is my best friend and influences a lot of my views, so you will get enough of her lol}.
Dad: “Babygirl, you treat everyone with respect and kindness, no matter what position they hold.”
My dad has always made me feel special but ensured I knew that didn’t mean I was better than anyone else. Did I forget the latter part a few times in college? Maybe but don’t we all need room to grow? These days, I try to keep both parts in mind when I interact with people and as an adult, I have added my own spin on that childhood advice. Not only do I treat everyone with respect and kindness, but I also want them to feel seen and acknowledged.
~Story-time~
A few years ago, I worked in a highrise office building and was behaving in a manner I thought to be very normal. I spoke to everyone I passed on my way in and out. I saw them daily so I didn’t find it extraordinary to say hello and ask how they were doing. One day I got this gorgeous bouquet from the construction workers and staff downstairs. I was completely blown away 🙂 I went downstairs to thank them and they said, “no thank you. You are one of the only people in the building that speaks and smiles at us every day.”
I wasn’t doing it to be recognized or rewarded, it’s just how I was raised. I want to be seen and acknowledged by those around me so that is what I put out– unless you ignore me…then I’ll probably never speak again lol. Hey, I’m still growing 🙂
I am excited to hear all the best advice you all have received from a parent or parental figure.
XOXO, Laya
