For most, a wedding is once and a lifetime experience. Photos and videos are a great way to capture that beautiful moment. Selecting the right wedding photographer and videographer can transport you back to the special day, so I wouldn’t suggest going with the cheapest professionals (pros) out there.
Before you dive into planning, read the tips below to help you select the best photographer and videographer for your big day.
Know Your Budget
It’s important to know what you can spend on wedding pros but I think in order to get there, you have to do some research. Wedding photography and videography can range from $1,000-$5,000. Figure out what you are willing to spend so that you don’t waste time looking for pros outside of your price range.
Tip: You can look into students or ask if they have less seasoned pros to helps save a little money on your 2nd shooter.
Ask For References
We got married in Mexico and the reception was originally going to be outside. I asked if they were comfortable shooting darker skin tones at night and if she could share a few examples. Knowing that they didn’t over/under light darker skin tones allowed me to relax and not worry about my guest or husband not showing up in photos. I was able to get a feel for their style and ask past brides how they really felt about working with them.
Make Time to Connect
Setting up interviews is a great way to do a vibe check. Your wedding is a big day, and your pros will be with you for some pretty intimate moments. You also want to make sure they are able to capture what you are looking for. Being able to share your vision and how you want your day captured is very important. We were also able to nail down how long we needed them. Capturing the party was very important to me so we had to make sure they would still be there to cover the reception (I had them come in the middle of my makeup appointment so they could get me getting ready them roll right into fun photos with the bridal party before I put on my dress.
Have Shots You Like
Hop on Pinterest and find some wedding shots you like. This helps them get an idea of your style and what you are expecting. It’s also important to have a list of your must-have photos so they can plan the day accordingly. Once you have your day-of schedule make sure you share it with them. We shifted our ceremony time based on their recommendation so we had time to do photos before sunset.
Know Your Rights
Make sure you not only understand what all is included in your package but what rights you have to their work. You want to understand if they own the rights to photos of you. You may not want them to use your photos for promo materials. On the flip side, you want to make sure you have the rights to use the footage as you please like sharing on social media or your blog.
There are places to save money when wedding planning, but your wedding photographer and videographer may not be the best place. We have all heard the old saying, “you get what you pay for.” Your big day isn’t the time for disappointment. Nobody will remember your centerpieces but you will have your photos forever. I hope these tips help make your selection of a wedding photographer and videographer a little easier!
