I can’t believe we have completed our first year as homeowners! The time seriously flew by! This first year has been a lot of fun but also a good learning experience. I have rounded up 5 lessons we learned to share with you all to tuck away for your own journey.
Take your time and buy pieces you love
It’s no secret that furnishing a home is pretty expensive. I’ve also learned that rushing the process can be even more expensive. We loved this cabinet when we saw it, but as we refined our vision and bought pieces that we actually loved, we had to part with those made in snap decisions on (shoutout to Facebook marketplace though). Take your time so you don’t end up with a house full of furniture that you don’t really love just to say its furnished.
Know when to hire a professional
DIY can be fun (picture below) but it’s important to know when to hire a professional. Some jobs are bigger than you can handle and that’s okay (plumbing, electrical, etc.). Don’t let your ego cost your more money on the back end!
Take advantage of your warranties
We were thankfully able to negotiate all our appliances into closing, so they were new. I still made sure that I took advantage of our warranties and got them all checked out. A few things seemed minor but one of them actually needed to be replaced. Since they were all still under warranty, it didn’t cost us a thing!
Small changes can transform a space
Upgrading small things like light fixtures can really transform a space! It’s also a fun low-cost way to add your personality to a home! We had a lot of fun shopping for light fixtures (your definition of fun changes when you become a homeowner lol)! Making changes to the aesthetics of your home is a lot cheaper to do after closing if you are building.
Live in your space to see how you use it
Once we started living in our home, plans we had for a few areas changed. As we lived in the different spaces we were able to see how we actually used them and tweaked our vision. I’m so glad we didn’t rush because each space feels special and curated for us!
I am excited to share our future learnings and the exciting memories we make in our home! We are thankful and truly enjoying our first year as homeowners. Be sure to check out the Home & Family tab to stay up to date!
XOXO, Laya
