A few years ago I attended a yoga retreat in Costa Rica. I felt really good about the moves, but I have always struggled with the meditation part. Turning my mind off and fully relaxing was something I always struggled with. I didn’t leave the retreat being perfect at it, but I was better, and I had the tools for the growth to continue.
Below are 5 things that have made me better at mediation over the years.
1. Make a List to Clear Your Mind
This one was a more recent addition to the list when I found it hard to fall asleep. The issue I have with relaxation is turning off my mind. I have found that writing a to-do list for the next day or journaling about what’s on my mind really does the trick.
2. Set The Mood
When I first started meditating a routine really helped me get in the mood. I would put on a mediation playlist, light a candle, and turn off the lights. It became a way to signal to my mind and body that it was time to relax.
3. Get Help From a Guided Meditation
If you find that your mind wanders and you can’t focus on a mantra or stillness for more than a few minutes, a guided mediation may do the trick. Having additional sounds helps my mind from wandering to other things. It’s also great when I can’t come up with a mantra on my own. I have linked one of my favorites above.
4. Look Cute
I don’t know about you, but when I look the part, things tend to fall in place! Having on something comfortable will make it a lot easier to relax!
5. Be Patient With Yourself
It took me years to get to where I wanted to be in my mediation journey! I didn’t start with 30 minutes of mediation. I have actually found that it’s simply too long for me. I started with 5 and worked my way up. 15 minutes is the sweet spot for me!
Extend yourself some grace no matter how you spend it. Set aside some time for yourself each day! I promise you will see it makes a positive impact on your day!
XOXO, Laya
