I have always been a planner, it calms me! Setting goals and knowing what’s next is something I’ve always done. Even when it hurt, I tried to work the plan! I have since learned that for some things — a trip, moving, etc., it’s great to have a plan. For other things — getting married, starting a family, etc., it’s better to set goals and prepare for things to happen in God’s time!
I get asked all the time how I am such a good planner, so I decided it was time to share! Below, are some tips to help you become a better planner.
1. Make a To-Do List
We have so much going on that it is hard to keep track of it all. I have a to-do list for work, my blog, and my personal life. Writing things down and assigning a date to them really helps me stay on top of things.
2. Use Your Phone’s Calendar
For birthdays, I set an alert to go off a few weeks in advance, to remind me to get their gift. It’s an annual reminder, so I never have to set it again after the first time. The same goes for meditating or working out. Until it truly becomes a habit, I schedule it in my calendar.
3. Take Care of The Small Things First
Being a better planner includes streamlining tasks and making life easier where you can. Small things like opening the mail or packages as soon as they arrive keep our main space clutter-free. Now when it’s time to prepare for guests or entertain, I can focus on my menu vs. decluttering before I clean.
4. Have a Few Signatures
#3 is the perfect segway into this point. Have a few signature dishes and cocktails that you are comfortable making. This will cut down on prep time and the stress of entertaining. — I promise I will do a post on this soon!
You will be a well prepared and stress-free host if you are comfortable with what you are making and serving!
5. Have a Guiding Light
I have been told a few times that I actually manifested the life I wanted. While this is true, it’s because I included God in every decision I made. I wanted to make 6-figures before my 30th birthday. — I prayed a very specific prayer during my job search! I wanted a family. — I asked God to prepare me to be a wife and mother. In all that I do, I make sure I am ready when the opportunity arises.
The key to being a better planner is organization. Organized thoughts, plans, and processes. Being thoughtful about how you move in the world will provide the perspective that you need. I get stressed out when I am late. I started checking my route and laying out my clothes the night before. Small changes have a big impact.
Pay attention to the things that bring you the most joy and peace. Then build habits that support that. You will then see that you have become a better planner! Let me know below or on social if you have any questions!
XOXO, Laya
