Writing your wedding vows can be daunting no matter how deep the love is. While difficult, it’s 1000% worth it! The personal touch really adds something special and gives your guests a peek into the true love you have for one another.
Below are some tips that helped me write my vows! Vows that managed to get a few thugs (my homegirls) to shed a few tears!
1. Read a Few Samples
Hop on Google and read examples of wedding vows! You will see that most people tell a story of their love. After a few, you will be able to see what drew you to them and what parts made you feel something.
2. Set The Tone For Your Vows
Talk to your partner about style, tone, and length. You don’t want to share an emotional 4-page letter and he tells an embarrassing 30-second story. My husband and I decided on 1-2 minutes of heart-felt vows! No hard parameters were set, I didn’t time it, but it felt like we were in-sync.
3. Start From The Beginning
What do you love about your partner? What drew you in? When did you know they were the one? Those stories are oozing with love! Reflecting is a great way for you to slow down and calm the nerves of the planning process. Your partner would also love to hear them!
4. What Are You Vowing To Do
Come up with a few promises or vows that you would like to make to your partner! I did a few serious ones, a funny one, and ended on a long term one looking towards the future.
5. Know Your Partner
While we love to joke and have fun, our wedding vows were not the time for embarrassing stories. We were true to our personalities but also treated this special moment with the reverence and respect it was due.
6. Write Your Wedding Vows On Paper
You will have a lot of feelings on your wedding day! No need to add the stress of memorizing your vows. Write them on something nice and put those phones away! Not only will they look good in pictures, but paper is truly timeliness!
In the weeks leading up to our wedding I jotted down notes on my phone but I didn’t sit down and write my vows until the night before. The stress of wedding planning was finally gone and I was going to marry Terrence no matter what. I was finally able to relax and look within to know exactly what to write.
Personal vows are the sentitmanal touch every wedding needs! I hope these tips help you write amazing vows for your big day!
XOXO, Laya
