One of the top triggers for my Ulcerative Colitis is stress. I had to learn how to manage my stress or be sick. Pretty easy to make the right choice when those are your options. Now that we are expecting it’s even more important that I manage my stress. I don’t want my baby to feel anything but peace can calm 🙂 I know it can’t be that way 100% of the time but I can do my best! Below you will find 3 ways I reduce stress that has worked for me in the past few years.
1. Praying For Others
This #LifeHack was developed many years ago. Whenever I feel super consumed with my problems or desires I know it’s time to let go and let God. The length of this practice depends on the severity of my “issues.” I have done this for as long as a month in the past. I pick a different person each week to pray for and speak nothing of my own issue. I usually feel better a few days into this exercise and even if my situation has not changed my perspective has.
Reach out to a few friends today and ask them what you can pray for! It’s one thing seeing your prayers answered but seeing God answer prayers for others is a whole different experience, in the best way!
2. Movement
I found this one by accident. About a month into the COVID crisis I took a walk to simply finish a podcast. Once it was over, I kept walking. I found that I was lighter, my head was clearer and I felt really good. I looked at my watch and 4 miles later this had become my new Jam. Walks on the Silver Comet Trail have truly become my peace. Some days I listen to music or podcasts, other days I listen to my surroundings. The next time you feel stressed, I suggest you take a walk. I can’t guarantee you will feel better but at least your heart will thank you.
::Sidenote:: This year I realized low impact exercise makes my mind and my body much happier. The results are slower but I am leaning into it. Yoga, walking, and stretching are what I need right now.
3. Reading a Good Book
I have been obsessed with reading since I was a kid. I thought the bigger the book, the cooler the kid (I am so serious). I have always loved how a good book can transport you to another place and time. When I am reading, it’s easy to leave my worries behind. When I am done, they feel a little lighter.
During the pandemic and war on Blacks in America, I needed all of my reading to be light and fun. I didn’t want to learn or be uncomfortable and I allowed myself to enjoy my books guilt-free. This post has a few of my favorite reads from last year!
Please share the ways you reduce stress and tag me on Insta! I would love to add them to my list. I’m sure we can all use some fresh ideas these days!
